Jannat al Baqi
Jannat al-Baqi is the oldest cemetery in Madinah. The word “Baqi” means a garden of trees. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated to Madinah in 622 CE this area was covered with trees and bushes. Later it was cleared and designated as the main cemetery for Muslims.
Many companions of the Prophet ﷺ, members of his family, and important figures of Islamic history are buried here. Over the centuries it has remained one of the most significant historical and spiritual sites in Madinah.
The cemetery includes graves of the Prophet’s family, companions, scholars and righteous people. Millions of pilgrims visit this sacred place during Hajj and Umrah to remember the companions and reflect on the temporary nature of life.
