Muzdalifah

Muzdalifah is an open, level area near Makkah in the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia. It is situated between Mount Arafat and Mina and is a crucial location for pilgrims performing the Hajj.

Pilgrims arrive here after sunset on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah from the plain of Arafat. Staying at Muzdalifah (Wuquf) is a mandatory part of Hajj. It is here that pilgrims perform the combined Maghrib and Isha prayers and spend the night under the open sky.

A significant ritual performed at Muzdalifah is the collection of pebbles. Pilgrims gather small stones here to be used for the "Stoning of the Jamarat" (Rami) in Mina over the following days.

Hajj Rituals at Muzdalifah

  • Perform combined Maghrib and Isha prayers upon arrival.
  • Spend the night in prayer or rest under the open sky (Sunnah).
  • Collect at least 49 to 70 small pebbles for the Rami ritual in Mina.
  • Depart for Mina after the Fajr prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah.
